Audiovisual piece for Premis Fundació Joan Miró, inspired from Haegue Yang, one of the nominated artist.
Haegue Yang engages in communication beyond language through visual abstractions and sensory experiences, incorporating smell, sound, light, and texture. Blending industrial manufacturing with traditional craftsmanship, she explores the emotional power of materials, blurring the line between modern and pre-modern. Her diverse practice spans various mediums and materials, including Venetian blinds, coat racks, and synthetic straw, which she manipulates through tearing, weaving, and illumination. Yang’s work is driven by a philosophical, political, and emotional reading of history, addressing themes like migration, post-colonial diasporas, exile, and social mobility. By translating historical narratives into formal and abstract expressions, she offers a non-didactic way of understanding contemporary issues.
The central theme of the piece is the idea of belonging to something specific, such as a place. Our primary focus is exploring how this sense of belonging can be expressed through movement.
